Last week, we highlighted the benefits of having your young child begin self affirmations and mindfulness reflective practices. But how can you continue these as your child grows older? How can you build on these newfound capabilities, reinforcing what they know while providing new beneficial skills? What else could you teach? Proactivity.
What does it mean to be proactive?
Being proactive means you think about a situation prior to it happening and you have a say in the outcome. It is the opposite of being reactive, which would be responding to a situation after it has already happened.
Why is it important to be proactive?
Being proactive helps you take control of what you have power over; it leaves less up to chance. You also aren’t as reactive, making less stress for yourself. And it is one of the seven habits of highly effective people (Franklin Covey), something I personally would love to pass on to my children.
Introducing “Affirm & Reflect - A Journal for Kids”
Our next kids journal is for ages 8-10 years old. It includes all of the habits from the previous journal (mindfulness/meditation, positive self-affirmations, reflection), and now incorporates being proactive. At the end of each day, your child will answer the prompt: I will make tomorrow a great day by... This gives them the chance to take control of their mindset and their environment, taking the lead on how they spend their next day. This journal continues empowering your child in developing a sense of self and resilience, and planting the seed to become a highly successful person.
